On January 6th, the final of the "Zhihui Xiaoxiang · Jinbo Award" Global High level Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Overseas Science and Technology Talent Competition, jointly organized by the Hunan Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, was successfully concluded in Xiangjiang Fund Town. Dr. Xie Wei, co-founder and chief scientist of Zhonghe Energy Storage, participated in the "High Performance and Low Cost Liquid Flow Battery Long Term Energy Storage System" project. After multiple rounds of preliminary and final roadshows, he successfully won the third prize of the Jinbo Award for Entrepreneurial Project Group, the "Most Valuable Investment Project List", and the invitation letter for project settlement.


In order to fully promote the construction of Changsha as a global R&D center city and seek innovation and development, this competition is themed "Science and Technology Innovation to Attract Talents and Create the Future". The contestants are doctoral students from outside the province, abroad, and overseas, competing on the same stage in fields such as artificial intelligence and electronic information, life and health, new energy and materials, and intelligent manufacturing. Dr. Xie Wei from Zhonghe Energy Storage was responsible for the development of vanadium battery products at United Technologies Group, the largest liquid flow battery company in the United States. He also received funding from the US Department of Energy to research sulfur based liquid flow battery systems.

High performance and low-cost liquid flow battery long-term energy storage system

Liquid flow batteries have become the safest and most flexible technology direction in large-scale energy storage applications, as they eliminate the risk of combustion and explosion of lithium batteries. It is expected to reach a market size of billions by 2030.
The biggest obstacle to the large-scale implementation of vanadium flow batteries at present is their high initial installation cost - more than twice that of lithium batteries, and the cost of vanadium electrolyte is already higher than that of lithium batteries. In order to reduce the initial installation cost of flow batteries, a new type of sulfur iron electrolyte has been developed by Zhonghe Energy Storage, which has a cost of only one tenth of vanadium electrolyte. Replacing vanadium electrolyte can reduce the initial installation cost of flow batteries to the same level as lithium batteries. The service life of liquid flow batteries is generally 2-3 times that of lithium batteries, so the full life cost of sulfur iron batteries can be as low as about half of that of lithium batteries, reaching a level of 0.2 yuan/kWh. With the current level of wind and solar power generation costs<0.2 yuan/kWh, the comprehensive electricity price cost of new energy can reach within 0.4 yuan/kWh, which is consistent with the grid electricity price and meets the economic indicators of new energy replacing thermal power generation, laying a technical foundation for achieving the "3060" dual carbon target.


Zhonghe Energy Storage is a leading global manufacturer of key materials and energy storage equipment for flow batteries, focusing on the research and development, manufacturing, and application of long-term energy storage technology for flow batteries. It is the earliest company in the world to commercialize the application of sulfur iron batteries. Currently, it is preparing to build the first national demonstration project of sulfur iron batteries at the megawatt hour level. It is expected to complete the demonstration project construction in 2024, launch commercial engineering products in 2025, and strive to achieve revenue of billions of yuan by 2030.
